Family fishing day is set for the afternoon of Sunday, October 6, 2013 on Swan Lake at the Heartland Acres Campus. Heartland Acres will open Swan Lake up for fishing for visitors as part of regular paid museum admission. The event will run from Noon to 4:00 PM. Wristbands to fish the lake will be available at the admission office in the museum. “As part of admission – Go fishin”.
Swan Lake is approximately four acres and holds a variety of fish including Catfish, Crappie, Bluegill and Bass. For the event, anglers will be allowed to “catch and keep” Crappie and Bluegill. All other fish are to be “catch and release”.
Fishing will be allowed from the shore only. Anglers are to bring their own gear and bait. Simple gear including: poles, 1/8 oz jigs, twister tails, hooks and sinkers will work fine. Worms make the best bait. Anglers are to follow all Iowa fishing laws and regulations and are required to have a valid Iowa Fishing License and be good sportsmen.
According to Iowa State University, aquaculture has been one of the fasted growing sectors in agriculture in recent years. Aquaculture was developed in China more than 3,500 years ago and fish farming only recently became a specialized agricultural business in the United States. In Webster City, IA a recently idled hog production facility was put back into production through some retrofitting, to raise fish. Fish raised in a controlled environment grow better and at faster rates then in the wild as there are no predators and their food source is delivered to the fish on regular basis.
