Fishermen of all ages turned out for the Family Fishing Day at Swan Lake on the Heartland Acres campus in Independence, Iowa on Sunday, June 2nd. The event ran from noon to 4PM and guests caught a variety of fish including Bass, Crappie, Blue Gill and Catfish.
Guests participating in Family Fishing Day were allowed to catch and keep Bluegill and Crappie while the Catfish and Bass were all returned. This has been standard practice since Heartland Acres allowed fishing during special events. Fishing the lake helps maintain healthy fish and helps to stabilize available resources to support the fish population.
Swan Lake was last stocked back in the early 1980s when the lake was originally constructed as part of the Highway 20 road development. The fish in the lake are from the original stocking. This summer, Heartland Acres will have studies performed to identify the population of each species in Swan Lake in an effort to manage the lake and keep it healthy for years to come.
Watch for future events on Swan Lake at the Heartland Acres campus coming this fall.
